About - FAQ
Bikes Against Bush is an interactive protest/performance occurring simultaneously online and on the streets of NYC during the Republican National Convention. Using a wireless Internet enabled bicycle outfitted with a custom-designed printing device, the Bikes Against Bush bicycle can print text messages sent from web users directly onto the streets of Manhattan in water-soluble chalk. How can I send a message to the bicycle?
The performance will be "live" from 1-3pm during each day of the Republican National Convention, from August 30 to September 2, 2004. Exact times are subject to change and will be announced on this website.
During the performance, online participants may submit messages to the Bikes Against Bush bicycle using the text input box above. Submitted messages must be less than 120 characters, and may not contain profanity or obscene language (see the guidelines on the right side of the page). All submitted messages will be archived and available for viewing in the "archives" section, however the cyclist will have the final say over when and where messages are printed.
Where will you be riding the bicycle?
Exact routes in Manhattan are subject to change. A GPS trace of the ride will be uploaded to the site after each performance.
How many printing bicycles will be on the streets?
Though there is currently only one printing bike, the Bikes Against Bush bicycle will ride with a posse, or gang, of cyclists.
How will I know if my message is printed??
Each message printed by the Bikes Against Bush bicycle will be uploaded to the front page of the website with a webcam snapshot and a GPS generated map image marking its location. Additional photo and video documentation will be uploaded to the site following each performance.
Will you print pro-Bush messages as well??
No. Bikes Against Bush, as the name implies, intends to promote a political dialogue contrary to the agenda set forth by the GOP and the Bush administration. The Republicans will have plenty of other opportunities, and millions of dollars at their disposal, to communicate their message.
Hey, isn't this graffiti?!
Bikes Against Bush will utilize a water-soluble chalk mixture. It is the same material used for marking athletic fields. It is environmentally safe and removes easily with water, or naturally biodegrades within 15 days. Thus, while the messages may have the appearance of graffiti, this is certainly not an attempt to damage or deface property.
Who are you?
Bikes Against Bush is produced by Joshua Kinberg, an emerging-technology artist and activist based in New York City. Joshua creates contagious media and politically expressive art pieces engaging a wide array of technologies from web development to reverse-engineered consumer electronics.
In 2004, Joshua committed his talent, education, and energies in working to defeat the reelection of the incumbent Bush/Cheney ticket. Joshua's Sloganator Memorial Slideshow, celebrating the Bush/Cheney campaign’s short-lived, ill-fated, online poster creation tool, has been emailed to thousands upon thousands of people, attracting roughly half a million visitors within 8 weeks. Joshua created Bluetooth Users Against Bush, a website encouraging anti-Bush participants to create "moments of ad-hoc solidarity" using Bluetooth-enabled devices (mobile phones, PDAs, laptop computers). The effort became an overnight craze, attaining so much instant notoriety that it warranted (and soon defeated) cease and desist threats from the Bluetooth Special Interest Group. Bikes Against Bush, which will use wireless bicycles to protest the 2004 Republican National Convention, has already garnered Kinberg national attention with interviews on CNN and MTV, amongst others.
Why are you against Bush?
Quite honestly, I believe this is the worst president of my lifetime. His policies have endangered the security of America and the entire world, and it is of utmost importance to elect a new president this November. There are numerous reasons why I am against Bush, in fact most are commonly known. Here are a thousand of them.
I think this is fantastic and I want to help you!
